COURSE SYLLABUS - Summer 2016 Cross-Cultural Business Communication Skills 工作环境中的商务沟通实用技巧 Professor Cherilyn Boyer COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will serve as an introduction to business communication in the United States. Cultural values and communication styles influence every aspect of workplace collaboration. As we work through a real world business case, students will be introduced to American communication styles and learn crosscultural adaptation strategies. The case will allow students to gain a new perspective on industry practices and on business writing, team work, and presentation skills. Students will work both individually and on teams to complete written and spoken assignments. The course will culminate in student team presentations to propose a solution to a company issue. COURSE OBJECTIVES Through this course, students will: • • • • • • Obtain a better understanding of business policies and practices in U.S. companies Learn to successfully navigate communication in a cross-cultural business setting Enhance written business communication skills Improve public speaking skills Gain confidence and ease in communicating in English Prepare for academic and career opportunities TEXTBOOKS AND OTHER MATERIALS Recommended textbook: • Reynolds, S. & Valentine, D. (2006). Guide for Internationals: Culture, Communication, and ESL. Upper Saddle River, New jersey 07458: Pearson/Prentice Hall. • Additional Articles and Power Point slide decks will be provided by the professor . METHODOLOGY AND POLICIES This course will be taught with a case-based method. The case will be founded on a real-world U.S. company and a situation. Communication strategies will be presented and examples provided by the professor. All ideas and samples will be discussed and practiced in groups and applied to written and spoken course assignments. The content of each class will build on that of the previous one, which makes attendance of all classes vital to successfully completing the course. Students will be expected to complete a series of individual and team activities and assignments. Selected readings will supplement inclass lectures. Assessment rubrics will be used to evaluate student writing and presentation skills, and final grades will be awarded for written and spoken work and for participation and initiative. About Professor Cherilyn Boyer Cherilyn Boyer is currently a professor at the University of Arizona’s Eller Colleage of Management. She has worked at Eller for the past 12 years as a Business Communication lecturer and an international student advocate. Her responsibilities include teaching Business Communication courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels across all majors as well as providing language and cultural support to international students. Prior to being recruited by Eller, Ms. Boyer worked at the Center for English as a Second Language at the University of Arizona for 17 years. She taught all ESL language skill classes at various levels, but specialized in Academic Preparation and Business English courses. With a Master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second language and 27 years of American University teaching experience, Ms. Boyer has a keen understanding of the challenges international students face and the proven ability to help prepare students for success.
